Abstract

Morphological description of a new coronary arterial anomaly in the Syrian hamster Mesocricetus auratus (Waterhouse, 1839) genetic and phylogenetic interpretation
Two coronary arteries originating from the right and left aortic sinuses respectively, and a third coronary artery arising from the left sinus of the pulmonary artery were found in a Syrian hamster, belonging to a family subjected to high endogamous pressure. The study was carried out using a corrosion casting technique. The right coronary artery was normal, whereas the left main coronary artery ran along the interventricular septum, supplying branches to the left ventricle. One anastomoses occurred between the coronary artery from the pulmonary trunk and a branch of the left coronary artery. The present findings agree with Hackensellner’s embryologic theory, and support the assumption that genetic factors contribute to the development of the coronary arterial patterns. Moreover, they agree with the hypothesis that the capability of the aortic and pulmonary sinuses to develop coronary arteries may be the rule in Mammals.
