Abstract

Comparative study of the life history traits of two satyrine butterflies, Hipparchia statilinus (Hufnagel, 1766) and H. semele (L., 1758) (Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae, Satyrinae)
The life histories of Hipparchia statilinus and H. semele are described from rearings under seminatural conditions, and from field observations in the central area of the Iberian Peninsula. Differences between these two butterflies are mainly related with their reproductive strategies and phenology. In H. semele the female fecundity is higher, the preoviposition period longer, the larval development shorter, and the female monogamy more strict. The relationship between these traits and the geographical ranges of both species is brieíly discussed. A higher plasticity of H. semele is suggested as a possible explanation for its wider latitudinal range.
